Why "just admin" is never just admin

Admin is not the boring bit that happens around the edges of a business. It is the foundation the whole thing stands on.
Admin is not the boring bit that happens around the edges of a business. It is the foundation the whole thing stands on. Every invoice sent on time, every client chased without you having to think about it, every piece of information found and filed and ready when you need it, that is what lets everything else run smoothly.

Funny isn't it. Admin is often considered to be easy. The introduction for many into the world of business. The stuff that anyone can do. "Just" an administrator. And the salary often reflects the stereotype. No skills required. No experience. Entry level.

Until you try to do it.

Simultaneously working across multiple systems, none of which were designed to talk to each other. Herding a room full of strong opinions towards one mutual decision. Juggling deadlines that all somehow became urgent on the same afternoon, alongside expectations that were never quite written down anywhere.

There is a particular skill in prising information out of someone's head and getting it into a logical order on the page. And then there is the even harder job of patiently explaining that while they thought they had given you a thorough description of what they needed, the words that actually arrived did not match the picture in their head at all.

Meanwhile the phone is ringing. There are texts coming in. Emails are stacking up. And somewhere in the middle of all of it sits the quiet assumption that because it is "admin", it can obviously be done immediately.

Managing expectations is a full time job in itself. Patiently chasing people for information they promised days ago, then just as patiently managing their expectations when the deadline that felt distant last week is suddenly looming. It takes a particular kind of steadiness to hold both of those things at once without dropping either.

None of this is easy. None of it is entry level, whatever the job titles and the salaries might suggest. It takes organisation, judgement, people skills and a fair amount of resilience, usually all before lunch.

Admin is not the boring bit that happens around the edges of a business. It is the foundation the whole thing stands on. Every invoice sent on time, every client chased without you having to think about it, every piece of information found and filed and ready when you need it, that is what lets everything else run smoothly.

Getting the right person involved with that side of things is not a small decision. It can genuinely be the difference between sleepless nights spent firefighting and being able to properly enjoy the business you built.

So next time someone says "just admin", you might want to ask them how their to do list is looking.
