March: The In-Between Month (and Why That Matters for Your Small Business)

A March reflection: The in-between month ( and why that matters for small business owners)
A reflective look at March as a “reset” month for small business owners—balancing year-end pressure, new momentum, and the importance of pausing, refocusing, and working on your business.

March is a funny month.

One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s snowing. The mornings are lighter, people seem a bit more cheerful, and there’s this sense that you’ve suddenly got more time… even though, in reality, you probably haven’t.

Because at the same time, it’s year end. Deadlines are looming, inboxes are busy, and most people are just trying to get to the end of the month in one piece — not thinking much beyond it.

Then Easter appears on the horizon, bringing a long weekend, a lot of chocolate, and (in my case) a run of family birthdays that seem to take over the calendar.

It’s a strange mix of energy — part pressure, part possibility.

And I think that’s why March feels like a bit of a reset. Not in the same way as January, but more of a quiet readjustment. A chance to pause, tidy things up, and refocus before everything speeds up again.

That’s certainly how this month has felt for me.

I’ve found myself naturally shifting between doing and reflecting. Finishing the 8-week Northern Max programme was a big part of that. It brought together entrepreneurs from across West Yorkshire and, if I’m honest, it was much better than I expected it to be (which I did tell the organiser!).

What it really gave me was something most small business owners don’t allow themselves — time to step back and work on the business, rather than constantly being in it. And that shift, even briefly, makes such a difference.

Alongside that, things have still been moving forward. I’ve started recording Season 7 of Strings To Your Bow, which will launch in September and mark two years of the podcast — something that still feels slightly surreal to say out loud.

I’ve run a couple of glass workshops, although if I’m honest, I’ve felt a bit stuck creatively at times this month. And instead of forcing it, I’m starting to recognise that it might just mean I need to take a proper break.

There’s also been the more practical side of business ticking along in the background. I’ve started preparing for an event in July — including buying things that feel very “proper business owner”, like pop-up banners — and I’ve finally taken the plunge and started a bookkeeping course.

Mainly because it’s something I’ve been putting off, and also because maths has never exactly been my strong point. But it feels like the right time to face it.

And I think that’s the theme of March, really.

Not big, dramatic changes. Not a complete reset. But small, important shifts. Tidying things up. Facing the things you’ve been avoiding. Taking a breath.

Refocusing on what actually matters.

So if this month has felt a bit mixed for you too — productive in some ways, slightly out of sync in others — you’re probably not alone.

You might just be in that same in-between space.

And sometimes, that’s exactly where you need to be.
